Made up of a group of 4 friends The Doors have become of the most influential bands of the 1960’s. The 4 men met in Los Angeles back in 1965 when they were UCLA film students.
Surprisingly for this type of rock band they never had a bass player. Instead Ray Manzarek (keyboards), Jim Morrison(vocals), John Densmore (Drums) Robby Krieger(Guitar) allowed their sound to be dominated by the electric organ and Morrison’s deep, powerful voice. This unique sound allowed them to stand out amongst the other rock bands and their songs are still well known to today!
Firstly signed to the Elektra Records record label in 1966, they released their first album 12 months later. This debut album featured hit single “Light My Fire”.
Both the single and the album were a huge charge hit and is often described as one of the greatest, groundbreaking recordings of that era. With their beguiling melodies blended with pop, classic and music from all influences they truly were a band that sounded like no other.
The band, with Morrison’s vocals explored the thrilling aspects of the psychedelic experience. In fact their first album was so stellar that it is said that The Doors found it almost impossible to match. Of course their next couple of albums contained bundles of amazing, first class material but they began running up against limitations by the disturbing visions.
By their 3rd album they seemed to have exhausted all their initial recordings and the album become some what rushed and failed to meet the superior quality of their first recordings.
Right from the beginning, Morrison was recognised as unstable. In fact in 1969 has was arrested for indecent exposure during a live performance in Miami. This incident is widely published as nearly splitting up the band. Despite this the band stayed together and turned out singles and albums through 1971. Their album LA Woman was completed on 1971 and Morrison made his way to Paris.
Unfortunately this proved to be the end of Morrison when he died (reportedly of a drug overdose) – The other 3 members attempted to carry on without their lead singer however they found this impossible and eventually split up.
Despite their ups and their downs, The Doors are popular even today amongst rock bands. In the mid 1980’s, Morrison was just as popular as had had been in the mid 60’s. Numerous copies of their old albums were stored as well as reissues and live material.
In the 1990s The Doors became popular again when in 1991Oliver Stone made The Doors; a feature film about the group starring Val Kilmer as Morrison.
